Dog Flu

Canine influenza viruses (CIV H3N8 and CIV H3N2) cause a respiratory infection in dogs that is often referred to as 'Canine Flu'. Canine influenza virus (CIV) is one of the causes of CIRDC (Canine Infectious Disease Complex) - also called 'Canine Cough' or 'Kennel Cough'. Two different canine influenza viruses have been isolated in the US:

- CIV H3N2

- CIV H3N8

CIV H3N2 just recently emerged in the Chicago outbreak of 2015. This virus is of avian origin and not related to the earlier CIV H3N8 virus, which is of equine origin. Therefore, dogs at risk should be vaccinated against both viruses.

Canine influenza viruses are relatively new viruses, so virtually all dogs are susceptible to infection when they are newly exposed because they have not built up natural immunity. Most dogs that develop CIV infection have a mild illness, but some dogs become very sick and require treatment.

Heartworm facts and treatment

Did you know that Heartworms are a type of roundworm that is spread by mosquitoes and has been reported in all 50 states and can live 5 to 7 years inside a dog? Year round prevention is the best way to keep your four-legged friend safe since your pet can become reinfected. Heartworms are easy to prevent but treatment can be costly and not guaranteed. To become infected with heartworms an infected mosquito must bite a host, for example dogs and cats. Symptoms are not usually evident in early infestation but without quick treatment the heartworms can cause irreversible damage. Treatment must be done. Heartworms will not go away themselves and without treatment, will be fatal. There is no heartworm test for cats so prevention should be high priority for felines

When to begin Heartworm testing?

Most dogs after 7months of age will be heartworm tested, until then they need to be on heartworm prevention every month, without missing a dose. Testing is normally done annually

What types of prevention do we offer?

We offer several varieties of prevention from chewable, injectable and topical (for cats). Chewable and topical prevention can be purchased in either a single dose or a 6 pack

  • Heartgard is a chewable monthly treatment for dogs 0 to 100 pounds. It is used for prevention of heartworms, roundworms and hookworms.

  • Interceptor (canines and felines) is a monthly chewable that prevents heartworms, hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.

  • Interceptor Plus (canines only) is a monthly chewable that can be used in dogs 6 weeks of age and older. It prevents against heartworms, roundworms, whipworms, hookworms and tape worms

  • Proheart is an injectable heartworm prevention that last for 6 months that can be administered to dogs 6 months of age of older. It has been proven effective in all breed sizes and dosage size depends upon weight.

  • Advantage multi for cats is a topical monthly prevention against heartworms, fleas, hookworms, roundworms and ear mites

Tick Borne Diseases

A simple blood test, a 4dx, can be done in clinic to dertermine which tick borne disease may be the underlining cause of illness. If you suspect your pup may be suffering from one of the diseases below, call and make an appointment ASAP. Year round prevention is recommended.

1. Lyme disease is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases in the world but only causes symptoms in 5-10% of affected dogs. It is caused by a spirochete (bacteria) species of the Borrelia burgdorferi group. When infection leads to disease in dogs, the dominant clinical feature is recurrent lameness due to inflammation of the joints. There may also be a lack of appetite and depression. More serious complications include damage to the kidneys, and rarely, heart or nervous system disease.

A few symptoms include:

  • Stiff walk with an arched back
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Fever, lack of appetite, and depression
  • Superficial lymph nodes close to the site of the infecting tick bite may be swollen
  • Heart abnormalities are reported, but rare
  • Nervous system complications (rare)

2.Ehrlichia is transmitted by ticks including the Brown Dog Tick. Ehrlichiosis can have three phases. Signs of the acute phase of the disease usually develop 1-3 weeks after the bite of the infected tick. The acute phase of the disease generally lasts 2-4 weeks. The Ehrlichia enter white blood cells and reproduce inside of them. In addition to the blood, these cells are found in the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and bone marrow.

A few symptoms include:

  •  Anemia
  • fever
  • depression
  • lethargy
  • loss of appetite
  • shortness of breath
  • joint pain and stiffnes

3. Rocky Moutain spotted fever affects dogs and humans and is transmitted from  the bite of the American dog tick Through blood tests, it has been demonstrated that cats may also become infected, but the disease in cats is minimal. Various rodents, raccoons, and fox may carry the causative agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

A few symptoms include:

  • loss of appetite
  • fever
  • depression
  • pain in the muscles and joints
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • edema (fluid accumulation) in the face and legs
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • Most dogs have neurological signs (dizziness, depression, stupor, seizures)
